Education is key to defeat radicalization. Basically, it all begins at home. “Your Mother”, a film that was launched in 2012, spots light on stories of mothers who shared how their children carried out violent acts that destroyed both children and their families’ lives. The movie emphasizes the mother role in protecting the family, since she has a strategic position. As one of the first educators for the child she has the power to have a rich conversation with their children, warning them about the danger of radical violence and thus preventing acts of terrorism.
Sheikh David Munir recalls that knowledge in Islam is mandatory (Recite in the name of your Lord who created – Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous – Who taught by the pen – Taught man that which he knew not. Quran: 96, 1-5) and that parents should be the first teachers of their children. The Imam of the Central Mosque of Lisbon also addresses that education must be comprehensive and must adapt to nowadays’ circumstances. Sheikh Munir also states the importance of the mother in transmitting the knowledge to their children about life values and how they must coexist with people regardless of their origins or beliefs. This relies in the acceptance of others and their differences being crucial to preventing radicalisation.
