Nurdine Chafim

The latest statics in 2018 show that the number of the immigrants in Portugal, reached 477.472 individuals from different countries. Nurdine Chafin is a Mozambican living in Portugal and he represents one of the 258 million people worldwide living outside their country of birth. As a migrant and as a voluntary Arabic teacher at ACITMMM – the Islamic Community of Tapada das Mercês and Mem-Martins – Mr. Chafim alerts that the way for a full integration is the teaching of respect and recognition of diversity which must start at home and should continue at school in order to end stereotypes. For him “whoever feels at home, never feels discriminated”.

The video shows the interaction between the migrant and local communities. Inclusion is a two-way process and Portuguese people are showing interest in learning other languages especially Arabic, being this one of the many services ACITMMM offers.
