Germany accounted for 28 % or 62 thousand of all first-time applicants in the EU Member States in 2018. It was followed by France (110 thousand, or 19 %), Greece (65 thousand, or 11 %), Spain (53 thousand, or 9 %), Italy (49 thousand, or 8 %) and the United Kingdom (37 thousand, or 6 %). Portugal may not be the first choice for asylum seekers due to its small refugee community, but Huruy proved otherwise. Huruy is Eritrean and lives in Portugal since 2016. He came long way from Eritrea passing by Italy, then to Portugal where he decided to settle. Despite some initial difficulties of integration, Huruy could adapt himself to the new environment, which helped him to integrate the Portuguese society and make friendships, as well as to improve his skills and build his career.
